Each day about a dozen or more of these sparrows are sitting in a forsythia bush right across my garden fence - but as soon as I'm close enough to take a picture, they're gone... Today I got this one at last!

  1. I'm jealous, I want these in my garden. Once it was the most common bird in the Netherlands, now it has become increasingly rare. Great shot! Posted 13 years ago
  2. Thanks, Ferdy! In fact, I was quite amazed to learn that sparrow populations are seriously declining in several places. You know, I live in the country side in northern Germany, and 'round here they're certainly not a threatened specie... Posted 13 years ago

The house sparrow is a bird of the sparrow family Passeridae, found in most parts of the world. A small bird, it has a typical length of 16 cm and a weight of 24–39.5 g. Females and young birds are coloured pale brown and grey, and males have brighter black, white, and brown markings.
