Polyrhachis dives - Golden Weaver Ant
I see this largish (10mm approx), distinctive ant on a daily basis, as it climbs around the bushes that line the path. I have not seen it as a trail of hundreds, more individuals or very small groups working an area.
Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Alongside a stream and paddy fields.
The Golden weaver ant is a species from Southeast Asia, and although they are not considered as true weaver ants, like the genus Oecophylla, they actually do weave their nest, using larval silk and all kinds of organic material. Nesting habits seem to be identical throughout the range. P. dives is found in open woodlands and swampy coastal plains, where it builds a characteristic carton structure on the lower branches of trees and shrubs, joining the foliage and twigs with silk to form the nest.. more
