The beautiful Ellipsidion nymph (Ellipsidion australe)
The last instar of an attractively coloured cockroach. About 16mm long. Yellow-orange cerci; black patches with fine white spots; boot-leather tan near margins; black legs and antennae; a fine yellow edge to the cephallo-thorax (which becomes clear like glass in adult form.
Found resting on the trunk of a 'Silver Princess' eucalyptus planted in a local school ground.
"Ellipsidion australe", or the eastern ellipsidion, or bush cockroach, is a harmless species of cockroach native to Australia and found in New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Victoria. The species was first described in 1863 as "Thyrsocera australis" by Henri de Saussure.
