Silky Sifaka couple greeting each other, Marojejy, Madagascar Spotting these rare mammals was glorious, and in the 15 minutes or so that we observed them, this was the peak moment. The male had been waiting for a few minutes for the female to catch up. Here we see the female just arrived, immediately caressed and greeted by the male.<br />

At the same time it was a moment of deep shame. These creatures are completely harmless plant eaters living in a very remote habitat, and still us people manage to drive it into extinction. Just because some morons have arbitrarily decided that Rosewood is incredibly valuable, robbing this species of its shrinking habitat. The silky sifaka, or silky simpona, is a large lemur characterized by long, silky, white fur. It has a very restricted range in northeastern Madagascar, where it is known locally as the simpona. It is one of the rarest mammals on Earth, and is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as one of the world's 25 most critically endangered primates. The silky sifaka is one of nine sifaka species, and one of four former subspecies of diademed sifaka. Studies in 2004 and 2007 compared.. more
