  1. What does second winter mean in this context? They have two difference plumages in two phases of the same winter? Posted 9 years ago
    1. It's in reference to his age. In their first year mew gulls coloration is brown overall with a brown speckled head. By their second winter, they've almost reached their adult coloration and feather patterns on their body, but their head remains lightly speckled. By next year his head and chest will be pure white. The common gull or mew gull ''Larus canus'' is a medium-sized gull which breeds in northern Asia, northern Europe and northwestern North America. It migrates further south in winter. Its name does not indicate that it is an abundant species, but that during the winter it feeds on common land, short pasture used for grazing.
