Firetail yoyetta ♂ (Yoyetta abdominalis)
A small plain brown 'cicada' (24mm) has just emerged from it's final moult to become a beautiful cream, pink, yellow and green adult with white veined wings.. but only for a short while. After another hour it will become nearly all black with an orange and yellow tuft at the tip of the abdomen. It all happened about 1.5 metres up the trunk of a large girthed eucalyptus.
The whole process then took about 40 minutes. The wing expansion was impressive as it only took about 3 minutes.
On the trunk of Eucalyptus viminalis in local nature reserve.
