Firetail yoyetta ♂ (Yoyetta abdominalis) A small plain brown 'cicada' (24mm) has just emerged from it's final moult to become a beautiful cream, pink, yellow and green adult with white veined wings.. but only for a short while. After another hour it will become nearly all black with an orange and yellow tuft at the tip of the abdomen. It all happened about 1.5 metres up the trunk of a large girthed eucalyptus.
The whole process then took about 40 minutes. The wing expansion was impressive as it only took about 3 minutes.
1. What a transformation! And quite a freaky photo if one does not know the context :)
Were you lucky to observe this or did you plan for it?

    1. It was a warm day when many had decided to make their final journey so I walked around all the trees searching for one just starting. A perfect place to sit in the shade for an hour. Hard to believe the colours they have when at their most vulnerable. Posted 9 years ago
