Tube Spittle bug (Chaetophyes compacta)
About 11mm long and wearing a nice green time-trial cycle helmet.
No spines on rear legs which are exposed. There is a leaf hopper which looks almost the same.
They make small tapered calcereous tubes in leaf axils to develop in as nymphs.
These were found on fine stems of Eucalyptus microcarpa in a large nature reserve.
Chaetophyes compacta is an Australian species of tube spittlebug. It was described by Walker in 1851.
