Wasp mimic (Pelecorhynchus flavipennis) This huge fly was found at dusk (poor light sorry) on a suburban footpath. <br />
Estimated to be 32mm from frons to wingtips at rest. I believe it mimics a very large spider-wasp we also have in the area. <br />
Very few records exist for this since it was described in 1921 although a friend recently found another one in a mountainous national park to the north. That makes 2 recent photos from the wild. They are known to feed in Leptospermum swamp  as larvae and are probably becoming fewer as human populations spread and drain those swamps.<br />
