Masked Devil (Cyclochila australasiae)

Another colour form of this wonderful cicada. Also see Blue Moon previously. Possibly the largest and loudest cicada in the world. These animals dominate the soundscape in summer around Sydney and Melbourne.

  None of our birds make persistent loud noise at night but these cicadas sure do. One of the loudest insects in the world.
  The lack of sleep is more often because they only call if the night is unbearably hot. If you grow up with it then it's actually quite comforting and they have a habit of phasing in and out together in a very hypnotic way :) Posted 9 years ago
