Great Northern Loon Making a Splash
Little Sebago Lake is a popular area for loons from mid-Spring to early Fall. Living near the lake, I often hear their calls and cries throughout the day. Loons will often make their nests on the shoreline or on one of many small islands on Little Sebago and can be seen with their younglings swimming close to their nests. Despite being mid October at the time of this picture, there were a surprising number of loons still on Little Sebago due to the mild start to the Fall season in Maine this year.

The common loon is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds. The species is known as the great northern diver in Eurasia; another former name, great northern loon, was a compromise proposed by the International Ornithological Committee.
