Webbs tufted-tailed rat at night in Masoala, Madagascar
One of our most interesting finds on our 2nd night in Masoala NP. Unfortunately, the actual tuft isn't on the photo.
It looks like I stumbled upon another category of Madagascar wildlife that is hardly described online. During identification, these two were the prime candidates:

Ellerman's tufted-tailed rat: http://www.planet-mammiferes.org/Photos/Rongeur/Myomo/AutMurid/EliuGra1.jpg

Webb's tufted-tailed rat is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It is found only in Madagascar. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

I have tried more than once since John said there must be tree frogs to find one, I have never seen anything but insects or I have woken up the birds :) Posted 9 years ago
