A grey owl launches off the ground after successfully catching a small rodent from the meadow. I was fortunate to observe the whole process, which was absolutely incredible! One of my favorite wildlife encounters to date! Observed in Yellowstone National Park.

    1. And the strangest thing is, these birds, although indeed wild, are fairly tolerant of people. The pair that I witnessed in this particular meadow would land only meters away from me. The other grey owls I observed this past summer would often fly to a nearby perch when I would wander into an area and watch me suspiciously from a more reasonable distance, but they did not seem very frightened and were not very difficult to photograph. The great grey owl or great gray owl is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length. It is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the only species in the genus ''Strix'' found in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North, cinereous owl, spectral owl, Lapland owl, spruce owl, bearded owl, and sooty owl.
