Perched Great Grey Owl This is the second grew owl experience I had during my 2015 YNP season. This owl, along with its mate, had a nest nearby and hunted the surrounding meadow at dawn and dusk. I never got a photo with both of them together, as they were usually hunting when I observed them. They are such magnificent birds, and it is eerie how quiet they are when flying! The great grey owl or great gray owl is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length. It is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the only species in the genus ''Strix'' found in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North, cinereous owl, spectral owl, Lapland owl, spruce owl, bearded owl, and sooty owl.
