Yellowfin grouper

I normally make pictures of signs but couldnt find this specific one in my collection. This photo was taken at the Praia do Forte Sea Turtle protection center. Next to turtles, they display a number of large fish inside open pools. This one is pink, with brown spots, about 1 metre (~3ft) in length.

If I had to guess, I would say it looks an awfully lot like a grouper, subfamily Epinephelus. But please do not quote me on that, as it is a guess, based on body form. Posted 11 years ago

    I found it! It's a yellowfin grouper, Mycteroperca venenosa. They are known to be popular aquarium fish in South America and tend to be over-fished in some areas where they are found. Posted 11 years ago

The Yellowfin grouper

The yellowfin grouper is a coral reef fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. It is generally a denizen of the deeper reef areas, but it may venture into shallower waters, especially during the cooler seasons.
