Harlequin ladybird beetle larva (Harmonia axyridis) When I first saw this little alligator looking thing, it was drinking sugar water from the hummingbird feeder. I must admit that I was somewhat shocked to learn that it would soon be a ladybug. I have seen thousands of these beetles throughout the years but this is the first time I have seen it in this stage of its life. When I first saw this little alligator looking thing, it was drinking sugar water from the hummingbird feeder. I must admit that I was somewhat shocked to learn that it would soon be a ladybug. I have seen thousands of these beetles throughout the years but this is the first time I have seen it in this stage of its life.

  1. I had the same feeling when first learning this. Here's a small list showing all 4 stages:


    Note that in that list, 3 stages were found in the same bush, same moment.

"Harmonia axyridis", most commonly known as the harlequin, multicoloured Asian, or Asian ladybeetle, is a large coccinellid beetle. This is one of the most variable species in the world, with an exceptionally wide range of colour forms.
