  1. Some other distinguishing characteristics I can see in the photo: prominent dorsolateral ridge, strong webbing on back feet, large heel spines, granular (bumpy) dorsal skin. The apparent absence of spines above the eyes is also a clue. Do you have any other photos of this frog? Posted 9 years ago, modified 9 years ago
  2. The closest match from from Glaw & Vences (2007) seems to be Gephyromantis asper, aka Mantidactylus asper. It is known from Nosy Mangabe. Glaw & Vences says that this species has large supraocular spines, but maybe those are variable or develop as the frog ages? Other than that, the Glaw & Vences description seems to match your photo very well. Posted 9 years ago
  3. Actually, Glaw & Vences (2007) does not record this species from Nosy Mangabe; that was my mistake. But it does show the species from the mainland nearby. Note that amphibiaweb's map for this species at <http://amphibiaweb.org/cgi/amphib_query?special=maps&genus=Gephyromantis&species=asper&photos=yes>; is from Glaw & Vences 2nd edition (1994); the 3rd edition from 2007 shows more locations. 1. Thank you so much for all the extra information! I know so little of frogs that even the terminology of the body parts is new to me. Based on your information and reference photo, I think Gephyromantis asper indeed is a likely and close match, so I will go with that one for now. Posted 9 years ago
    2. John, do you think this is the same species?

Mantidactylus asper boulengeri, Nosy Mangabe, Madagascar I can see some similarity with this find:<br />
