  1. Oh oh Blackbird, with your shining yellow beak.
You'd tell me why it's yellow, if you could only speak.
"I tell you why it's yellow, though I can only sing.
I dipped it in a crocus on the first day of spring."

    1. LOL. Did you make the right career choice? Posted 14 years ago
    2. Where did you get the lovely poem? My Mum used to quote it to me 70 odd years ago. So maybe its a traditional Nursery poem? Posted 4 years ago
      1. That was the very first poem I ever learnt. I think I must have been about 3 or 4 at the time. I remember reciting it at a family christmas party. I was rewarded with an extra slice of cake. Funny how that poem has always stuck in my mind. I have no idea who originally wrote it. I've searched the 'net but although I can find plenty of quotes and recitals (usually around the War-time by children) I've never found who wrote it. Lost in the mists of time I suspect. 1. Many thanks for your reply. If our mothers knew it, at least we know it dates back to a generation before your and my childhoods. My sister who is 89 still remembers it and says it always stuck in her mind too. Posted 4 years ago

The Common Blackbird is a species of true thrush. It is also called Eurasian Blackbird, or simply Blackbird, where this does not lead to confusion with a similar-looking local species. It breeds in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand.
