Sarcodon fuscoindicus the cap of this was quite black and almost greasy looking. Despite the wiki entry, which paints this mushroom as almost entirely purple, from other descriptions and photos, I think that at times the purple color may not show until the mushroom is cut or damaged. ''Sarcodon fuscoindicus'' is a species of tooth fungus in the genus ''Sarcodon''. Found in the western United States, it produces fruit bodies with a violet-black cap, violet flesh, and violet spines on the cap underside. The fungus was first described by K.A.Harrison in 1964 as a species of ''Hydnum'', then transferred to ''Sarcodon'' in 1967 by Rudolph Arnold Maas Geesteranus. He placed this species in section ''Violacei'' of ''Sarcodon'', along with ''S. talpa'' and ''S. joides''.
