American matsutake! This one may not look like much, but this is one of the most sought after wild mushrooms in the woods and I found one :) - now to find more.... As soon as I get an expert confirmation I&#039;ll let you know just how tasty it was :) :) :) update: got my confirmation... now to cook it (yes it was delicious)<br />

Sorry though.. today&#039;s photos will not get exact geo tags. They might not be white rhinos, but they do need protecting. Prices have come down from the crazy amounts of a few years ago, so it isn&#039;t quite as bad, but irresponsible (or ignorant) pickers can destroy the mycelium beds if they rake or dig. 1. I recently saw a show on Discovery (I think) of people seeking after highly valuable fungi, I wonder if that concerned this one, I don't recall. Good job for finding it, and for protecting the location details. Posted 9 years ago
    1. The days of really crazy prices are over - a decade or so ago the prices were insanely high and a basket of mushrooms could be sold for thousands of dollars, but the craze has died down and as far as I know the pickers may only get $5 a pound or so from the wholesalers now. Brokers appear to be selling them from about $50 to $30 a pound depending on how much you buy and I've heard that grocery stores are at about $60. It's still lucrative enough to attract commercial pickers, but you won't get rich doing it anymore. The reputation is still there for sure too, so some people may be lured in with thoughts of easy money and get a big let down when they find out the reality. I've no interest in selling them... I just really like to eat them (they are the tastiest mushroom I've ever had) and I'm have fun sharing them with other people who do too. So far I've found 8 all together in several different places. I've eaten some, given some to the guys at the sushi bar and I've got a few in the fridge. Posted 9 years ago

''Tricholoma magnivelare'' is a gilled mushroom found in the Pacific Northwest of North America growing in coniferous woodland. These ectomycorrhizal fungi are typically edible species that exist in a symbiotic relationship with various species of pine. They belong to the genus ''Tricholoma'', which includes the closely related East Asian songi or matsutake. ''T. magnivelare'' is also known as ponderosa mushroom, pine mushroom.

In recent years, globalization has made hunting for pine.. more
