Look but don't eat... really! Many newts produce toxins from skin glands as a defense against predation, but the toxins of the genus Taricha are particularly potent. An acrid smell radiates from the newt, which acts as a warning for animals to stay away. The toxin isn't absorbed through the skin so humans should be able to handle the newts safely with bare hands. Toxicity is generally experienced only if the newt is ingested, although some individuals have been reported to experience skin irritation after dermal contact, particularly if the eyes are touched after handling the animal without washing hands. On a dare, a 29-year-old man in Oregon swallowed a 20-cm rough-skinned newt and died in July 1979. Geotagged,Rough-skinned newt,Taricha granulosa,United States Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Before learning more about this newt I picked it up and placed in on these leaves to get a better shot. It was very late in the day so light was horrible and I only had a monopod. I was lucky enough to stabilize the monopod against a piece of wood and used my timer delay to minimize camera shake. Only one of the shots came out usable. Nonetheless, I found out when I returned home that they are extremely poisonous. Luckily I didn't eat it. :-) Posted 9 years ago, modified 9 years ago
  2. That is one fat newt! Posted 9 years ago
    1. i thought the same thing. As mentioned I had to pick it up and place it in better light to get the shot and after I placed it down on the leaves it kept its back arched upward. I think it was puffing in an attempt to look larger. It appeared normal (flat to the ground) when I first found it. Happy shooting! Posted 9 years ago
