"Russula xerampelina" is a basidiomycete mushroom of the brittlegill genus "Russula". Two subspecies are recognised. The fruiting bodies appear in coniferous woodlands in autumn in northern Europe and North America. Their caps are coloured various shades of wine-red, purple to green.
