  1. I have found the best way to catch good shots of birds like this is to bait an area and wait for them to come to you, try crushed peanuts pressed into lard/hard fat. The lard holds the peanut so the bird takes just a few more seconds at your focal point trying to free them, if you just put peanut down they dash in grab and go. In this shot the mixture is hidden in the crack in the log.

The red-breasted nuthatch is a small songbird. The adult has blue-grey upperparts with cinnamon underparts, a white throat and face with a black stripe through the eyes, a straight grey bill and a black crown. Its call, which has been likened to a tin trumpet, is high-pitched and nasal. It breeds in coniferous forests across Canada, Alaska and the northeastern and western United States.
