this one is totally bizarre...
It's not nearly so shaggy when it gets bigger - I don't think I'd ever have recognized it without help (thanks to Mikael over at Mushroom World).

      1. Awww shoot!!! I thought that was its real name. The only thing even remotely like this in the UK would be Shaggy Pholiota (Pholiota squarrosa) or one of the Puff Ball species (Lycoperdon echinatum) which this obviously isn't, I wish it did occur in the UK. Cap 1โ€“5cm across, convex to bell-shaped, dark brown, covered in erect pointed scales. Stem 30โ€“70ยด5โ€“10mm, concolorous with cap, apex paler, covered in recurved brown scales, base with bluish-green down. Flesh white becoming reddish, bluish-green at stem base. Taste mild, smell fishy or acidic. Gills whitish later rusty-brown.
