    1. their appearance looks to be quite variable - some are fatter, some have very small white tips. They also change *a lot* over their growing period. They go from fuzzy and moist looking to dry and black - like they've been burnt to cinders. Posted 10 years ago

"Xylaria polymorpha", commonly known as dead man's fingers, is a saprobic fungus. It is a common inhabitant of forest and woodland areas, usually growing from the bases of rotting or injured tree stumps and decaying wood.
