If I don't get an ID for the fly from BugGuide, I think the mushroom may be Neolentinus kauffmanii

    1. I think it might be from the family Lauxaniidae, but I couldn't really find a good match and I'm not sure if those occur this far north. There's not too much info, but I've got my BugGuide request in, so I'm hopeful someone there recognizes it. It seems a bit distinctive to me - looks like a body builder fly :p Posted 10 years ago

Heleomyzidae are small to medium-sized flies which vary in colour from yellow to reddish yellow or reddish brown to black. The wings often have small but distinctly longer, well-spaced spines mixed with the shorter spines along the leading edge and the crossveins are often clouded.
