Mule Deer Buck in Velvet
A mule deer buck shows off an impressive rack still growing in velvet. Within the next couple of months, the mule deer bucks will shed their velvet and polish up their fresh antlers for the upcoming rut, or mating season. Captured in Yellowstone National Park's Hayden Valley.
The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a deer indigenous to western North America; it is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. Two subspecies of mule deer are grouped into the black-tailed deer.
