Day 14 of her Reign... This is the ant from a previous post (below) that I have taken in and am currently looking after. She's been put in a test tube with water and a protein pellet for when she starts feeding - or rather when her young start to feed her.
She's been stored in a warm dark cupboard and has only been looked in on twice now as to not disturb her.
As you can see - her brood pile is getting bigger and bigger. Perhaps another 2 weeks and they will hatch - the first loyal subjects of her new empire...
It was nice to sit out having a BBQ and watching them all fly round and land, looking for their new nesting site so they can start their own colony. The black garden ant is a formicine ant, the type species of the subgenus ''Lasius'', found all over Europe and in some parts of North America and Asia. It is monogynous, meaning colonies have a single queen.
