Trypetoptera punctulata side view, Netherlands Although being an avid macro enthusiast, I regularly pass on most flies. But not this one. Its interesting checkered wings caught my attention. I found a website having 20 pages full of species in this family:<br />

Just my luck, it was the species on the very last page, the last photo even. This one belongs to the family of flies referred to as Snail Killers, due to their larvae feeding on snails. Geotagged,Heeswijk-Dinther,Netherlands,Spring,Trypetoptera punctulata Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. Nice! I'm the same, flies don't really do it for me unless something about them really stands out. Sounds like you did some good detective work! Posted 10 years ago
    1. Thanks Stuart, it did take me half an hour or so to identify this one, was about to give up when I found an exact match on the last page of that link :) Posted 10 years ago
  2. Very nice shot Ferdy!, Ive shot these a few times (might not be exact species but very similar if to the contrary) but never as perfect as this shot. Posted 10 years ago
    1. Thank you, Darryl, it's one reasonable one in a larger series of failures, but that's macro photography :) Posted 10 years ago

Length: 6-7mm. A beautifully marked fly, belonging to the Scyomizidae family. The wing pattern helps to identify the species. It also has long, forward-pointing antennae, typical of the family.
