  1. It is not the best point of view but there are hardly any stripes as far as I can see, only one yellowish spot. One thing is sure though, it is not the Australian Melangyna viridiceps. Here are some UK species. Maybe it is an Eristalis sp.?

    1. Thanks Wildflower! I have found a pic which looks exactly the same as mine called Eristalis sp. Syrphidae, but it isn't coming up in the identify species. Any ideas?

      1. Eristalis sp. Syrphidae is not a species name, it is a family name combined with a genus, which is a partial identification. Sorry :) Posted 10 years ago

  3. These guys can be quite difficult - there are 270 species in the UK and often there are several that look quite similar to one another. There's a lot of good info here - http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artmay07/cd-hoverflies.html

    I'd suggest the Eristalis pertinax - http://toutunmondedansmonjardin.perso.neuf.fr/EN/pages_EN/eristalis_pertinax_EN.htm
Yours does have the yellow front and mid legs, and I think, the slightly feathery antenna.

    1. 270! wow. I have to say the Tapered Drone fly you suggested looks identical to. With their being 270 it seems so difficult to get an exact ID unless i had half a dozen different angled shots. So i am going to go with your suggestion unless anyone can correct it. Thanks Morpheme! Posted 10 years ago
      1. lol... not as bad as here - we've got almost 900 species of them here. It can be hard just to get to the genus, much less the species Posted 10 years ago

"Eristalis pertinax" is a European hoverfly, also known as the drone fly. Like "Eristalis tenax", the larva of "E. pertinax" is a rat-tailed maggot and lives in drainage ditches, pools around manure piles, sewage, and similar places containing water badly polluted with organic matter.
