Long-tailed Tit during golden hour At the start of spring I came out of photography hibernation and went for my first small little macro walk of 2015. There weren't many insects or flowers, so I quickly got discouraged. I noticed some small active birds around the area, and out of boredom I tried to find it in the app I have on my phone. Having identified them as long-tailed tits, I then cursed myself for not taking my 80-400mm lens with me. However, as an experiment I tried playing this bird's call from the smartphone, and to my surprise, it worked extremely well. Several of these cuties approached me to check out the source of the call, however, still not close enough for a good capture.

Later that day I therefore returned with my zoom lens and repeated the experiment, and this time I was able to capture the above, as the last rays of light hit the fields of tall grass.

Note that I do not encourage or support the massive use of bird recordings. I was an experiment I plan to use in moderation. I used it in particular because I never photographed this species before. Results may also differ per species. The reason it works so well for this species is that they are incredibly social. They live and operate as a group, and will leave no bird behind. Thus, when hearing a call of their brothers and sisters, they probably come to see if it is ok. Aegithalos caudatus,Europe,Geotagged,Heesch,Long-tailed tit,Netherlands,Spring Click/tap to enlarge

The long-tailed tit or long-tailed bushtit is a common bird found throughout Europe and Asia. There are several extensive accounts of this species, most notably Cramp and Perrins, 1993; Gaston, 1973; and Harrap and Quinn, 1996. The majority of relevant research has been directed at its social and breeding behaviour.
