2 Messor Barbarus workers eye up a seed. My harvester ants stockpiling seeds for the winter (although they do this all year round). The major workers crack the hard outer seed casings and smaller workers chew the seeds up and make what's known as 'ant bread' with it to feed the colony. There's quite a diverse range of size between the workers - many people assume the larger ants are soldiers but this species does not have a soldier caste. 1. That's fascinating, Stuart, I'm an instant fan of your colony. There's much to learn about ant behavior, glad you're sharing it here. Posted 10 years ago
  2. Hi, thank you for the positive comment. I'll certainly keep shooting them. The 3rd colony I have are a little camera shy at the moment. I believe they are Formica Cinerea however I purchased a Manica Rubida queen and these strange black/silver stripy bottomed ants arrived instead. I'll see what I can do in getting them to say hello.
    Cracking website by the way!
