    1. I think what makes the difference for me is that I have two really good sources for local flora, flowers in particular. I generally use PNW Wildflowers for my initial ID, then click on the link to the WTU herbarium to confirm or further research it. Both sites have excellent maps on where to expect to find plants. The WTU site allows easy backwards access to genus wide searches, so if you find something that is close, but not quite right, it's easy to see all of it's close relatives.

      Non flowering plants are harder if they aren't very distictive - I haven't found a great source yet for grasses and sedges
