Edith's Checkerspot? another candidate I'm not great with butterflies - but I think this one may be an Edith's Checkerspot. The spots seem to match the reference you posted - Wildflower? Unfortunately I don't have a wing underside. I was lucky that this one was still long enough for one frame! 1. The list of species for your region is the same as for Oregon where the previous specimen was found. It does indeed seem to match the pattern of Euphydryas editha. Unfortunately, Euphydryas chalcedona and Euphydryas colon are so variable that there are a few specimens in the referencies that are very similar as well. It seems that the best way to discriminate between them is that second row of orange spots on the underside of the hind wing of Euphydryas editha which are white if any on the other species and you don't have the photo to confirm it. There's nothing much we can do about it so I guess we could identfy it as Euphydryas editha being the most likely match. Posted 10 years ago

Edith's checkerspot is a species of butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. It is a resident species of western North America and among the subspecies, entomologists have long been intrigued by their many phenotypic variations in coloration, wing length, and overall body size. Most populations are monophagous and rely on plants including ''Plantago erecta'' and ''Orthocarpus densiflorus'' as its host species in developing from eggs through to larvae, pupae, and mature butterflies. Males exhibit polygyny.. more
