Camp Robber, Pretty in Blue These birds can become quite the camp robbers! This Stellar's Jay was found right outside my camper as my friends and I were cooking over the campfire. He squawked at us a couple of times as if he was begging for any scraps we might throw his way. Such a cool looking bird! Taken near Fishing Bridge, YNP. 1. These guys are real characters. I've got one near my house training me to give him peanuts ;-), but really, he started coming around with the crows and I'd throw them a a few peanuts since they amuse me. Now he'll sit out on the power line and cackle at me until I give him one. They make an amazing range of sounds from a loud screech to a soft burble that I think they do when they are happy. They really are very pretty and smart too. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago

The Steller's jay is a jay native to western North America, closely related to the blue jay found in the rest of the continent, but with a black head and upper body. It is the only crested jay west of the Rocky Mountains. While it does not have as prominent a crest as the Blue Jay it can be found west of the Rockies especially in south east British Columbia.
