  1. Not quite sure of the ID on this - I think it is a member of the family Pyrgomorphidae, commonly called the Toxic Milkweed Grasshoppers, and may be Ausarches miliaris or closely related. Mostly A.miliaris has white stripe on face, but have seen couple photos labelled with this ID that have red stripe - just not sure they are reliable IDs. Anyone shed some light on this?

    1. I'm not sure if it is an Aularches miliaris or not. As you say, none of the more reliable references show or describe a red colour variation and I don't know how reliable the last one is. I cannot find any other match either.

    2. I don't have the expertise to confirm or deny the one you found, but do you have a reference page of that species with the red stripe?

By the way, what an awesome insect!

And one more: by now I think you're the most traveled member of JungleDragon, I'll mention that in the newsletter.

  2. Thanks - If only the amount of travel was an indication of the quality of the photography........yes I have been very fortunate to be able to visit and live in some amazing places Posted 10 years ago
    1. The quality of your photography is just fine, no need to be so modest! By the way, if you reply to a person, please use the "reply" link below that comment, otherwise will not get a notification and may miss your answer entirely. Posted 10 years ago

    1. Thanks for that reference. Although we are not 100% sure, I think we have reasonable evidence to identify it as Aularches miliaris. I identified it for you, but it will count for your species intros. Posted 10 years ago

"Aularches miliaris" is a colorful grasshopper belonging to the family Pyrgomorphidae found in South and Southeast Asia. The bright warning colours keep away predators and their defence when disturbed includes the ejection of a toxic foam.
