  1. It's likely that it is Streptopus amplexifolius, though if it has escaped from a garden it could be a hybrid variety. Are you on the east coast? There's one other variety of Streptopus there, but the flowers become pink. https://gobotany.newenglandwild.org/species/streptopus/amplexifolius/ Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago
    1. I'm not sure it is this one - Streptopus amplexifolius has single flowers while here we have a few per node. Posted 10 years ago
      1. I get the feeling there may be many hybrid garden varieties - it really doesn't look exactly like any of the wild ones, so I suspect it may be an escapee. Posted 10 years ago
        1. The leaves are very different too. It looks like a Polygonatum biflorum.

  2. Leave it to me to come up with a mystery species! I am sending a photo to the Biology Department at Dartmouth College for review. Posted 10 years ago

Polygonatum biflorum (smooth Solomon's-seal, great Solomon's-seal, Solomon's seal). The plant is said to possess scars on the rhizome that resemble the ancient Hebrew seal of King Solomon. This is a species of the genus Polygonatum native to eastern and central North America. It is often confused with Solomon's Plume which has upright flowers.
