      1. 9 years later, but I think you are right, the photos of "cabbage white" that I found are much closer. This photo doesn't show the distinctive spot on the wings, but that's because the wings are closed, it seems.

        Thanks for the help! Sorry I had stolen this "species first" for so long!

The Small White is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the Yellows-and-Whites family Pieridae. It is also known as the Small Cabbage White and in New Zealand, simply as White Butterfly. The names "Cabbage Butterfly" and "Cabbage White" can also refer to the Large White.
