Male and Female Torrent Ducks, near Guango Lodge, Ecuador The male is swimming in the water and the female is the white one on the rock. Often seen in pairs, they can be very difficult to see when they are swimming in the fast flowing andean streams. We felt very fortunate to spend about 30 minutes watching these two. It is incredible watching them dive and swim through very fast rapids, not at all what I expected from ducks. 1. I've not been to South America, so I've only ever seen these ducks on television, but they were captivating! It's quite amazing how well they swim in the rapids - even the little duckling. Watching them in person must have been incredible. Posted 10 years ago

The torrent duck is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is the only member of the genus "Merganetta". Today it is placed in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae after the "perching duck" assemblage where it was formerly assigned to was dissolved because it turned out to be paraphyletic.
