  1. Very nice shot! I often open my lens up too much when shooting wildlife for a shallow depth of field and/or because of poor lighting. Out of curiosity where do you think you needed to be "f-stop" wise to have captured the chicks in focus? I am looking at the new 600mm canon lens and see you were at 500mm and what was your physical distance to subject? Thanks!! Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago
    1. Thank you Stephen. The light was poor and 400iso is high for me...i never like to go above that if i can help it. But my aperture was as wide as it will go at 500mm so i was surprised at the depth of field in this shot. However, i did use the adjustment tool in Lightroom to add detail on the ducklings, so that helped. Posted 10 years ago

The common merganser or goosander is a large seaduck of rivers and lakes in forested areas of Europe, Asia, and North America. The common merganser eats mainly fish. It nests in holes in trees.
