I was not aware there is a huge Flamingo colony in Kalochori lagoon, Gallikos river estuary near Thessaloniki, Greece. Just next to the buildings. Great place for the birders. Shall definitely visit this place frequently. 1. They are so close to the buildings. We are planning to go to Thassos next week. I hope to see some flamingos by the Mesta river. Posted 10 years ago

        1. Wish you a nice trip and good luck! A lot of nice photos!
Unfortunately I would not be able to make too much photography - I am with my company's people - a Team Building weekend.

          1. Thanks!
It would be strange to show up in your full gear as you described it ;)
We haven't had any team building events for a while now - tough times.

The greater flamingo is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia, and southern Europe. Some populations are short distance migrants, and sightings north of the breeding range are relatively frequent; however, given the species' popularity in captivity, whether or not these are truly wild individuals is a matter of some debate.
