    1. I normally backpack in an area like this with my wife. There are normally trail heads that take you within a few km of these areas. We encounter a lot of foliage and wildlife on these hikes but you really have to be looking for the living creatures as they are very well camouflaged and skittish. Summer temps range between 100º - 110º (f) reaching as high as 120º in the late afternoon and there are never water sources. We have made 9 hour hikes/day and altitude changes of more than 1,300m on occasion as well. A secondary method of getting into the desert on longer trips is mountain biking when elevation changes are manageable. Sorry to be so lengthy!! Steve

      1. It's not lengthy it is very useful info that may help others. I often hear that big parts of the desert come to life at night, any experience with doing night trips?

        Converting fahrenheit to celcius for metric users: 37C - 43C, with peaks of 49C.
