    1. Indeed - he was cold and waiting out on the rock for the sun to hit him. I almost walked right by as he's nearly the same color as the dry moss. He didn't stick around much longer after this, the sun finally came around the trees, but I was able to get very close while he was still cold. They can bite, usually if you pick them up, but they aren't poisonous and really are pretty docile, so I was able to get quite close. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago

The western terrestrial garter snake is a western North American species of colubrid snake. At least five subspecies are currently recognized.
