  1. During some periods of the year, the highway that I drive daily to work has enormous clouds of these moving in coordination, a phenomenon that distracts many drivers. Strangely though, I never see them up close anywhere in my direct surroundings. Posted 10 years ago
    1. I have witnessed similar events in the spring and fall, when the red-winged blackbirds migrate to and from the area. Sometimes, the cloud of birds seems to be nearly a mile long! Posted 10 years ago

The common starling or European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), also known simply as the starling in the British Isles, is a medium-sized passerine bird in the starling family, Sturnidae. It is about 20 cm (8 in) long and has glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen, which is speckled with white at some times of year.
