Pied oystercatcher. Photographed on the foreshore of port Philip bay in Victoria, Australia. This bird was very good at pulling up long sand worms after pushing its beak into the sand right up to its face. I usually see these birds in pairs. The pied oystercatcher is a species of oystercatcher. It is a wading bird native to Australia and commonly found on its coastline. The similar South Island pied oystercatcher occurs in New Zealand.
