Burchell's Zebra - The Odd One
Well, this photograph is pretty descriptive in itself. Oddities within Nature and the Animal Kingdom does occur. Scientists have a thousand theories and "solutions", but ultimately these "odd" animals stand out.
Here a black foal is photographed within her herd, with an adult mare "laughing" at her uniqueness. This is not the case though, as a family will never "laugh" or mock with any member of their own. As a matter of fact, it is only man that will mock his own and other species.
Unique alterations in color and pattern is not common, and this shot beautifies how we are all different ... even within the Animal Kingdom. Still, part of a family, this foal does not know better or that she is any different to those around her. Her mother is still her mother.
Burchell's zebra is a southern subspecies of the plains zebra. It is named after the British explorer and naturalist William John Burchell. Common names include: Bontequagga, Burchell's Zebra, Damara Zebra, and Zululand Zebra .
Burchell's zebra is the only sub-species of zebra which may be legally farmed for human consumption in the UK.
