  1. When birds do that - especially water birds, but others too, they are usually spreading oil from their uropygial (preen) gland that's at the base of their back onto their feathers. Even in waterbirds it's not really thought to be waterproofing, but keeping their feathers in good shape does contribute to their overall water shedding abilities. Posted 10 years ago

The Dalmatian Pelican is a member of the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe to India and China in swamps and shallow lakes. The nest is a crude heap of vegetation.
