  1. This little gal is definitely not a jumping spider. I'd hazard a guess that it could be a house spider/giant house spider or possibly a species of wolf spider. It's hard to tell without being able to see all of the eyes or the top of the abdomen. Posted 10 years ago
    1. Ok - thank you. I have just spent ages on google images trying to match it up and thought it was! I have a view from above too, which might help identification. I don't think its a giant house spider as this guy was pretty small (less than 1cm) and his legs were tiny - my experience of house spiders is that they are quite chunky fellas - is that right? Having just looked up the wolf spider - I think that is the one. He has a stripe down the centre of the head much like the other images! Thank you for your help! Posted 10 years ago
      1. Sara, can you please post to shot from above as well? Wolf spiders are very hard to identify, having hundreds of species looking much alike. Posted 10 years ago
        1. I have posted the view from above - not sure if I've put it in the right place. I've posted it as a new image and labelled it "wolf spider???" Grateful for any help here as it has been driving me crazy trying to identify it today!! It reminded me of the zebra jumping spider (about the same size, and with lots of eyes!) which is why I thought it was a jumping spider originally! sorry for being so rubbish with my identification! 1. Thanks, it's getting late here so I'll have a look at that other shot later.

It's ok to struggle with identifications. Most of us are not trained in it, and this happens to be a very hard type of species to identify. As for it not being a jumping spider: those have shorter, more upright legs and far bigger eyes. The big eyes are unique, used for their incredible hunting techniques.

You'll start to see such patterns when you identify things for a while, which is what this site is about.
