Rock Python - Sleepily out of Hibernation
I will identify this species shortly, but for the time being, I will refer to it as a Rock Python.
This species is highly protected in Southern Africa. Its numbers has been reduced due to habitat loss and high demand as it is high in food value, especially among local tribes still living off the land and its resources.
This specific guy was just waking up from hibernation as one can still see a vague "cap" over the eyes, rendering it not very clear.
This species can grow to be extremely large and long. There is one I am still looking for on the Game Reserve that is well over 5 meters long. Needless to say, the big ones can prey on various small antelope. Young guys like this one photographed, will ambush mice, birds etc.
"Python sebae", commonly known as the African rock python, is a large, nonvenomous snake of Sub-Saharan Africa. The African rock python is one of seven species in the genus "Python". It has two subspecies: one found in Central and Western Africa, the other in Southern Africa.
