
Sambar stag portrait
These guys are a lot more skittish than the Chital in the forest, and for good reason, they are the preferred food for tigers! So, to have one brave enough to allow me to get close enough to get a close portrait is a rarity and a privilege! :)

The sambar is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.

Indeed the bald patch is where the 'sore spot' is located, but as it is out of season, it is not oozing or prominent! :) Posted 10 years ago
