Very strange! It seems in Wikipedia there is a separate page for Stereum hirsutum, which in some other sources is shown as a synonym of Stereum rameale (the other synonym being S.complicatum)

To make the confusion more fully according to ITIS all the three species are separate, not synonyms???

  lol - it can be super confusing, but somehow a little comforting to know that even the experts haven't always got it all figured out. Often I find a local source to ID something, think I've got it, then realize there's 5 more species that look pretty well identical described throughout the world…. sometimes it comes back to location and I can narrow it down, sometimes it comes down to synonyms, but other times I have to admit defeat and leave things un-id'ed. The Hairy Curtain Crust

"Stereum hirsutum" is a plant pathogen. "S. hirsutum" is in turn parasitised by certain other species such as the fungus "Tremella aurantia". Substrates for "S. hirsutum" include dead limbs and trunks of both hardwoods and conifers.
